The Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards celebrate excellence in sport, academics, leadership, and community among Bermuda's primary, middle, and senior school students, carrying forward the spirit of a champion on the field and a mentor in life.
Denton Hurdle was one of the finest rugby players Bermuda has ever produced, a natural athlete, a respected leader, and an inspiring teacher. A product of Bermuda's school system, he attended Warwick Academy and Bermuda College before earning a degree in Physical Education at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.
An all-round sportsman who excelled in cricket, soccer, and volleyball, rugby was his first love. He debuted for the Teachers RFC 1st XV at just sixteen, and through the 1970s and early 1980s captained both Teachers RFC and the Bermuda National XV. His proudest memory was being named Outstanding Player of the 1984 Easter Classic, selected by visiting U.K. international players.
Since 1986, the Bermuda School Sports Federation has honoured his legacy through these awards, recognising students who embody the same qualities he did. His nephew, Derek Hurdle, was a winner in 1989; his great-nephew, Tyler Hurdle, in 2020.
Presented since 1986, the awards honour the top student-athletes in Bermuda's primary, middle, and senior schools, celebrating excellence in sport, academics, leadership, and community involvement. One male and one female student from each school, in their final year, are eligible.
